Some dart players and fans ask themselves: When will the sport of darts finally reach the Olympics? To answer this question a little bit closer today we want to take a close look at the development of the sport of darts. Furthermore we will have a look at similar sports which are already considered as Olympic disciplines. Thereby we want to give you a better overview about the regulations of Olympia and what is still missing to make darts Olympic.
The origins of darts can be found towards the end of the 19th century. Thus, the sport has been practiced for several years and has evolved greatly over the years. This includes on the one hand the rules, the playing equipment but also the presence of the sport. Because the way we know the sport of darts today, it was not always. For example, many people still believe today that darts is not a real sport. Or that dart players are necessarily fat, tattooed and permanently drunk while playing darts. But because we know better we can say: Darts is sport! We can also justify the image of the serious sport of darts.
Many people know the old familiar pub sport image of darts. This means as much as: Darts is played exclusively in the pub and mostly by drunken men. But this misconception is also understandable in a way. In the past, darts was played only in pubs, and players could drink a few pints. Even at official tournaments players could drink beer on stage. This has changed in the meantime, of course. But many people still have this image in their minds and thus resist the statement: Darts is sport. Our task as "darts experts" is to enlighten these poor ignorant people.
The sport of darts today is definitely different from what it was many years ago. With the establishment of the PDC, millions of people are now infected by darts fever and the growing TV ratings prove that. Meanwhile, there is also much higher prize money, which is mainly due to the popularity of the sport among fans and sponsors.
Darts players and experts also know that darts is an individual mental sport and more than 50% of it is decided in the mind. Even though darts players don't move as much as in other sports, they still have to perform at their best to beat other good opponents. If you want to watch every official darts tournament live on TV, it's worth getting a free trial month from DAZN.
Now we come back to the question: When will darts be Olympic? Unfortunately we can't give you an exact date. But we can explain what the current barriers for darts are and how they can be overcome. In addition, we show you below the advantages and disadvantages if darts should be recognized as an Olympic discipline.
Let's now look at the barriers that currently still hinder the inclusion of darts as an Olympic discipline. In fact, the question of whether darts is a real sport is at the forefront. It is true that darts is officially recognized as a sport. However, the main part of the population does not see it that way. This is mainly due to the old pub sport image of darts. But there is hope here. It is precisely the darts clubs and associations that are working to change the image. For this reason, considerable progress has already been made here. In addition, darts professionals now have to take regular drug tests, as is the case with other sports, for example.
Another potential barrier is the official regulations for the Olympics. Here, each sport must have a global distribution of the sport (min. 50 countries for men and min. 35 countries for women) on at least four continents. In addition, international and national tournaments must be held regularly. Here, the sport of darts already fulfills all regulations.
Another obstacle has also already been overcome. Because the German Olympic Sports Conf ederation has already included darts in its program. The regulations of the German Olympic Sports Confederation as follows:
Another obstacle has also already been overcome. Because the German Olympic Sports Conf ederation has already included darts in its program. The regulations of the German Olympic Sports Confederation as follows:
Another reason why darts is qualified for the Olympics is that similar sports have already been recognized as Olympic disciplines. These include, for example, golf, sport shooting and archery. All of these sports are designed around a single movement and aiming at a specific point. Golf is also the youngest Olympic sport, along with rugby. Therefore, there is still hope for the sport of darts and in our opinion it is only a matter of time before it becomes Olympic.
Assuming darts were Olympic, what would this mean for the sport and what would Olympic darts tournaments look like? First of all it must be made clear that there are two major international darts federations. You know them under the abbreviations PDC (Professional Darts Corporation) and WDF (World Darts Federation). Therefore, the first question here is which darts federation would participate in the Olympics. Furthermore the question would be open whether the sport of darts would be more interesting for the Olympic Summer Games or Winter Games. Depending on that the darts tournament calendars would have to be adjusted accordingly.
Nevertheless the sport of darts would gain even more popularity as an Olympic discipline and would profit a lot from it. Olympics would in any case be a new level for the sport of darts. However, the Olympic darts tournaments would also run somewhat differently than usual. Presumably the Olympic regulations would not tolerate celebrating darts fans and it would be generally much quieter in the halls. But these are only speculations. In any case we would be happy about darts as an Olympic discipline and hope for the future - Good Darts!
