Many hobby players and beginners keep asking themselves how they can raise their level and improve their darts game . New and inexperienced dart players in particular often need a long time to improve their dart game because they lack effective dart training .
Without the right dart training tips, the wrong adjustment screws are often turned . For this reason, we would like to give you 10 dart training tips that are guaranteed to improve your game and answer the following question: How do I become a better dart player?
Training tip 1: You don't play at the highest level every day - you have to accept this
Hobby players usually get a very big head problem when they cannot maintain their shape over a longer period of time . It is completely normal that the top level cannot be played continuously .
Many external factors influence this. Be it the volume , concentration , stress in everyday life or a blockage in the head that subconsciously changes the throwing movement .
Some players fall apart because they played the best game of their lives yesterday and then averaged 20 points less the next day.
In this context, it is important to know that almost every dart player feels this way - even the professionals. Here the performance gap is not quite as big, but here too the form on the day often determines a lot of prize money.
Expert tip: So accept it, even if you have a bad day, remember your dart training tips and don't immediately doubt your abilities - after all, you've already shown that you can do it!
Training tip 2: Training against strong players also makes you stronger
The second tip can be copied to almost every sport. It can be observed again and again in competitive sports that players only go beyond their limits when they are challenged. This phenomenon can also be observed again and again in darts.
More precisely, as amateur players, we often adapt to the opponent's level - both positively and negatively. For this reason, dart training against strong players is considered a very effective dart training .
Even if you lose all of the first 10 games because you simply cannot keep up with your opponent's high points average, you will most likely have a significantly better average than against a weaker player. These sporting defeats can help you make a lot of progress!
Training tip 3: Find the optimal throwing style and never change it!
I know the third of the dart training tips all too well from my own experience. During dart training you will always be able to achieve great scores with your usual throwing style .
Suddenly the competition begins and under pressure the arrows simply no longer want to fly into the desired field. Then it starts to rattle in my head. You doubt whether it is really the perfect throwing style and subconsciously change it .
But this is the biggest mistake you can make. The reason is simple: Even if you have a bad phase, you will be successful in the long term with your usual throwing style . After all, the dart throwing motion is always the same.
However, if you try to use a new throwing style, this may help in the short term , but in the long run you will find that the success leaves a lot to be desired. In general, it is not important to switch back and forth between different throwing movements.
Expert tip: It's better to trust your abilities and stick to the same throwing style, no matter how things go. Because throwing the dart consistently is the most important motto here.
Training tip 4: Play steel darts - even if you play soft darts in competition!
Now comes a dart training tip that is rarely used in practice, but can have a big effect . If you are a soft dart player, I particularly recommend training on a steel dartboard .
The reason is that you need a much cleaner throwing style with steel darts than with soft darts. It is known that the points in soft darts also count if the dart doesn't get stuck.
It is also known that this is not the case with steel darts . As a result, steel dart players automatically adopt a clean throwing style, as there is the certainty that the points will not count if the dart falls off the board again.
Ultimately, this also offers great advantages to soft dart players, as the darts then fly more straight . This can also be practiced very easily by replacing a soft tip with a steel tip.
Training tip 5: Mental arithmetic refreshes your head
If there's one thing I learned from steel darts, it's that I've been much faster and better at mental arithmetic since then. For a beginner it is sometimes a challenge to add up the correct number of points without spending a few seconds on the board.
Over time this works faster and faster and only then do you notice how rusty the head is. Thanks to today's technical possibilities, we as humans are increasingly forgetting how to do mental arithmetic.
With steel darts you can significantly brush up on this skill. And one thing is certain: this definitely can't do any harm in everyday life!
Training tip 6: You learn darts under pressure!
Another dart training tip that we give you is that you only really learn to play darts under pressure. While everything often seems to be working in dart training , suddenly nothing works under pressure.
This won't change too quickly, especially at the first tournaments. Over time , however, a wear and tear reaction sets in in the brain, which makes it easier for you to survive under competitive conditions.
For this reason , every tournament basically brings you forward in your development , no matter what placement you end up with.
Training tip 7: Learn tricks from the professionals and apply dart tips
You can also learn a lot from the dart professionals. However, you should be careful not to start copying the throwing style , throwing motion or stance of your favorite player.
It's more about paying attention to the little things:
- For example, use wax on your fingers to increase grip .
- Or bring a whetstone to the oche so you can sharpen the tips again in an emergency.
- Furthermore, the professionals often give valuable tips in interviews after the games , which you can also use.
Training tip 8: Mental training – darts is a matter of the head
Darts takes place in the mind. This is not a new finding, but has been the case for decades. You can be the greatest talent, but if you don't have your head under control, you will still not be successful and your dart game will not improve.
Darts mental training is therefore extremely important. So try to completely ignore everything around you and concentrate solely on throwing until you are in the so-called “tunnel” .
Training tip 9: Train regularly without overdoing it
As a beginner you often tend to overdo your darts training. After two hours at the latest, your concentration usually drops significantly, so you no longer play as well as you did at the beginning.
From this point on, a training session will hardly get you any further and effective dart training becomes a long way off.
Expert tip: It is better to try to dose the training correctly and carry it out in several stages. For example, twice an hour a day if time permits. In addition, it's no use if you only play in winter, for example. Over the summer you will lose the feel for the dart and have to start all over again in the fall. Continuous dart training throughout the year is therefore essential.
Training tip 10: Accept dart training tips and training aids
The last of the dart training tips deals with training aids in darts . The darts market has now also developed enormously positively. Due to the high demand, some training features can also be found on the market.
Special boards with smaller fields , training rings or similar products. Feel free to use these products to further train and perfect your aim and feel for the dart . It will be worth achieving effective darts training, we promise!
