Many amateur players and beginners repeatedly ask themselves how they can raise their level and improve their darts game . New and inexperienced darts players, in particular, often take a long time to improve their darts game because they lack effective darts training .
Often, without the right dart training tips, the wrong adjustments are made . For this reason, we would like to provide you with 10 dart training tips that are guaranteed to improve your game and answer the following question: How do I become a better dart player?
Training tip 1: You don’t play at the highest level every day – you have to accept this
Amateur players usually experience a major mental problem when they are unable to maintain their form over an extended period of time . It's perfectly normal that they can't consistently play at the top level .
Many external factors influence this. Be it the volume , concentration , everyday stress , or a blockage in the mind that subconsciously alters the throwing motion .
Some players are broken by the fact that they played the best game of their life yesterday and the next day they score 20 points less on average.
It's important to note that this is probably true for almost every darts player – even the pros. While the performance gap isn't quite as great, even here, form on the day often determines the amount of prize money.
Expert tip: So accept it if you have a bad day, remember your dart training tips and don't immediately doubt your abilities - after all, you've already shown that you can do it!
Training tip 2: Training against strong players also makes you stronger
The second tip can be applied to almost any sport. Time and again, it's been observed in competitive sports that players only push themselves beyond their limits when they're challenged. This phenomenon can also be observed repeatedly in darts.
More specifically, as amateur players, we often adapt to the level of our opponents – both positively and negatively. For this reason, darts training against strong players is considered a very effective form of darts training .
Even if you lose all of your first 10 games because you simply can't keep up with your opponent's high scoring average, you'll most likely have a significantly better average than against a weaker player. These sporting defeats can therefore help you progress considerably!
Training tip 3: Find the optimal throwing style and never change it!
I know the third dart training tip all too well from my own experience. When practicing darts, you'll always be able to achieve great scores with your usual throwing style .
Suddenly the competition begins, and under pressure, the arrows just don't want to fly into the desired target. Your head starts to rattle. You doubt whether your throwing style is really perfect and subconsciously change it .
But this is the biggest mistake you can make. The reason is simple: Even if you have a bad phase, you'll be successful in the long run with your usual throwing style . After all, the dart throwing motion is always the same.
However, if you try a new throwing style, it might help in the short term , but in the long run, you'll find that your results will be less than satisfactory. Generally speaking, it's best not to switch back and forth between different throwing movements.
Expert tip: Trust your abilities and stick to the same throwing style, no matter how things go. Throwing the darts consistently is the most important thing here.
Training tip 4: Play steel darts – even if you play soft darts in competition!
Now for a dart training tip that's rarely used in practice, but can have a huge impact . If you're a soft-tip dart player, I especially recommend practicing on a steel dartboard .
The reason is that you need a much cleaner throwing style with steel darts than with soft darts. It's well known that points with soft darts count even if the dart doesn't stick.
It's also well known that this is n't the case with steel darts . This automatically allows steel dart players to adopt a clean throwing style, as they know that points won't count if the dart falls out of the board.
This ultimately offers significant advantages for soft tip dart players, too, as the darts then fly more straight . This can also be practiced very easily by replacing a soft tip with a steel tip.
Training tip 5: Mental arithmetic refreshes your mind
If there's one thing I've learned from playing steel tip darts, it's that I've become significantly faster and better at mental arithmetic . For a beginner, it can sometimes be a challenge to add up the correct score without spending a few seconds at the board.
Over time, this becomes increasingly faster, and only then do you realize how rusty your brain is. Today's technological advances are causing us as humans to forget mental arithmetic more and more quickly.
Steel-tipped darts can significantly improve this skill. And one thing's for sure: it definitely won't hurt in everyday life!
Training tip 6: You learn darts under pressure!
Another darts training tip we'd like to share with you is that you only really learn to play darts under pressure. While everything often seems to work during darts training , suddenly nothing works under pressure.
This won't change too quickly, especially in your first few tournaments. Over time, however, a wear-and-tear reaction will set in in your brain, making it easier for you to succeed even under competitive conditions.
For this reason, every tournament , regardless of the final ranking, essentially advances your development .
Training tip 7: Learn tricks from the pros and apply dart tips
You can also learn a lot from the darts pros. However, you should be careful not to start copying the throwing style , motion , or stance of your favorite player.
Rather, it is about paying attention to small details:
- For example, use wax on your fingers to increase grip .
- Or bring a whetstone with you to the oche so you can sharpen the tips again in an emergency.
- Furthermore, the professionals often give valuable tips in interviews after the games , which you can also use.
Training tip 8: Mental training – Darts is a matter of the mind
Darts is a game played in the mind. This isn't a new observation; it's been true for decades. You can be the greatest talent, but if you don't have your mind under control, you'll still fail to achieve success, and your darts game won't improve.
That's why darts mental training is so important. Try to completely block out everything around you and concentrate solely on throwing until you're in the so-called "tunnel."
Training tip 9: Train regularly without overdoing it
As a beginner, you often tend to overdo it with darts training. After two hours at the most, your concentration usually drops significantly, meaning you're no longer playing as well as you did at the beginning.
From this point on, a training session will hardly get you anywhere and effective dart training will become a distant prospect.
Expert tip: Try to pace your training accordingly and do it in stages. For example, twice an hour a day, if time allows. It's also pointless if you only play in the winter, for example. You'll lose your feel for the darts over the summer and have to start all over again in the fall. Continuous dart training throughout the year is therefore essential.
Training tip 10: Accept dart training tips and training aids
The last of the dart training tips deals with training aids for darts . The darts market has also developed enormously positively. Due to the high demand, several training features are now available on the market.
Special boards with smaller areas , training rings, or similar products. Feel free to use these products to further practice and perfect your accuracy and dart feel . It will be worth it for effective dart training, we promise!
